Chapter 2
2.
It was Savannah.
She usually treated me like a total stranger at work, so this was the first time she had ever called out to me in front of everyone.
She walked over with a cold glare, looking down at me with disdain.
"I told you to come to my office. Why did you ignore me?"
I offered no excuses and simply replied, "I was too busy working."
She had used that exact excuse on me countless times, and hearing it come from my mouth left her momentarily speechless.
"It was just a harmless joke. Do you really have to throw a tantrum over this?"
Seeing that nobody was within earshot, Savannah sighed and softened her tone.
"I know you are upset about Garrett's little joke, and I know I did not speak up for you. But he is a newly appointed director who just brought massive visibility to our company."
"I could not undermine his authority in front of the entire staff. You need to be more understanding."
"You know damn well that was not a joke. It was blatant workplace bullying and public humiliation," I cut her off icily.
"Where do you think our revenue comes from? Does it come from Garrett drinking iced lattes in his air-conditioned office all day?"
"If I had not been out there running through the rain and snow to meet every single client without even eating lunch, do you think this company would have closed a single deal during this housing slump?"
Confronted with my harsh words, Savannah's face darkened completely.
"Lucas, do not flatter yourself. You act like you carry Price Properties all on your own!"
"If Garrett had not designed those winter promotional campaigns, would we have attracted so many potential buyers? You benefited from his strategy, so stop acting like a victim. It is pathetic!"
Without giving me a chance to reply, she turned around and walked away.
If I had not heard it with my own ears, I would never have believed such idiotic words could come from the woman I loved for twelve years.
His so-called winter strategy was nothing more than setting up cheap folding tables in front of the showroom, handing out dollar-store gloves and lukewarm gas station coffee.
Most of the coffee went cold untouched, and the gloves ended up in the nearest trash cans.
Yet in Savannah's eyes, that was the secret to our multi-million-dollar sales, while I was just piggybacking on his genius.
Over the years, to protect her ego as a powerful businesswoman, I never bragged about my accomplishments or complained about my exhaustion.
I thought that as long as she had a heart, she would recognize my devotion and hard work.
I never imagined she could be so completely blind to my worth.
In that moment, the very last shred of love I had for Savannah vanished into thin air.
I dropped the mop and tore off my rubber gloves.
"Fine. If you truly believe Garrett generated every penny of revenue, then I resign. We are breaking up for good!"
