Chapter 1
Chapter 1
In the seventh year of my mission to win Landon's heart, he married his childhood sweetheart.
A friend asked him about me. "You're just going to get married like this, but what about Valerie? She loves you so much, she's going to lose her damn mind."
Landon's eyes were full of cold indifference. He sneered, "Let her go crazy then. We've been sleeping together for years, and I'm bored of her anyway."
So on the day of his wedding, I lay in a hotel room and drew a sharp blade across my skin. I wanted to wish him a happy marriage with my blood.
Landon called me on my phone. "Can you stop throwing a tantrum, and can we just end things with some dignity?"
My heart finally died completely. I spoke to the system with absolute calm. "System, I want to give up the mission. I want to go home."
……
On the day Landon and Rosalie got married, he actually had the nerve to send me a wedding invitation. I opened it and saw their photo. They looked like a perfect match, a match made in heaven.
I tossed the invitation into the trash can. I stood there, looking at the starlight outside the window.
The city lights were brilliant in the distance. The giant billboard screens downtown were scrolling through Landon and Rosalie's wedding photos. Fireworks lit up the edge of the sky.
I stood alone in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. The outside world was completely cut off from me.
I felt so lonely.
But this was also the most relaxing and free moment I had experienced in the seven years of trying to win Landon over.
Only at this moment was I truly myself.
I didn't have to break my own heart over someone who didn't belong to me.
My phone kept ringing, and it was so loud.
I picked up the phone, wanting to hang up.
But when I saw that familiar string of numbers, my hand hesitated.
It was Landon calling.
Actually, Landon rarely called me. Most of the time, he would only speak to me in cold, brief text messages.
I always thought he was just a man of few words.
That was until I saw the deep affection on his face when he proposed to his little childhood sweetheart. I heard the sweet nothings he whispered to her.
That was when I finally understood.
Landon wasn't bad with words at all.
He just didn't want to talk to me.
Thinking of this, a sharp pain shot through my chest.
This was the most despairing day of my seven years of loving Landon.
I hung up the phone and lay on the bed. I used a sharp fruit knife to slice across my wrist.
It didn't take long for me to feel waves of coldness from the heavy blood loss.
I instinctively opened Landon's messages, wanting to take revenge. I wanted him to know that his wedding day was also the anniversary of my death.
But then I saw our chat history. I saw the massive blank spaces and how he treated his words like gold.
I finally let out a weak laugh.
Forget it, he wouldn't care anyway.
He would only think I was bringing bad luck to his big day.
I should have known earlier that I was just a dispensable bedmate to Landon.
Maybe when he heard the news of my death, he would clap his hands and feel a sense of relief.
I moved my fingers and struggled to type out my blessing to Landon.
I wrote, "Landon, I wish you and Rosalie a happy marriage."
After the message was sent, Landon called me again.
I looked at the caller ID, suddenly wanting to hear his voice one last time.
But after the call connected, I instantly regretted it when I heard the cold voice on the other end.
Landon said, "Can you stop throwing a tantrum, and can we just end things with some dignity?"
Hearing Landon's words, my chest violently spasmed. A suffocating pain quickly spread through my entire body.
It hurt so much.
My heart hurt, and my wrist hurt too.
Landon added, "Today is the happiest day of my life, my wedding day."
"You need to be sensible and show up to the wedding. Rosalie keeps asking why you aren't here to celebrate with us……"
My hands and feet were freezing.
But I let out a low laugh.
I was laughing at my own naivety and at this seven-year-long joke of a romance.
On the other end of the phone, Landon was still talking.
I interrupted him and said softly, "Landon, I'm afraid I'll lose my mind. I might tell Rosalie that we've been sleeping together for seven years. Do you think she'll be mad?"
Landon paused for a moment. He lowered his voice, suppressing his rage, "Valerie, you seriously disgust me. Why don't you just drop dead?"
I hung up the phone and looked at the blood gushing from my wrist.
I curled the corners of my lips and smiled.
Landon, I am being very obedient.
I closed my eyes tightly. I didn't want to look at the giant screen outside the window anymore, where Landon was staring at Rosalie with such a gentle expression.
I was afraid that if I kept looking, my heart would hurt even more.
My voice was faint, so quiet that only I could hear it.
"System, I'm giving up the mission. I want to go home."
After a long time, a voice echoed in my mind. "The heart in your real body can no longer sustain your life. If you go back, you won't have many days left to live. Are you sure you want to go back?"
I looked at the wound on my wrist and gave a bitter smile.
"I'm sure."
