Chapter 1

1

My husband, a high-profile judge, didn't know I was already cold and stiff in the morgue.

After a night of drinking at the bar, he lazily sent me a voice note.

"Where the hell are you? I won the case. I'll give you a little treat tonight as a reward."

When I didn't reply instantly, he sent two more.

"Ignoring my messages? Stop playing hard to get!"

"Is this still about me not helping you with that lawsuit? Don't be so petty!"

I still didn't respond.

Fuming, he blocked my number immediately.

It wasn't until the third day, when there was still no word from me, that he finally remembered to check on me at the hospital. He ran straight into a nurse.

When the nurse realized who he was, she let out a cold, mocking snort.

"Oh? You finally remembered you have a wife who died on the operating table?"

Caleb Reed froze, looking at the nurse in disbelief.

"What did you say? Who's dead?"

The nurse looked at Caleb like he was an idiot.

"Your wife, Sienna. I really don't know what kind of husband you are."

"Your wife had kidney failure, yet you forced her to donate a kidney. You basically signed her death warrant."

Hearing this, he completely lost it. He pulled out his phone and started spamming my number.

"Okay, I won't yell at you anymore. Just talk to me, please?"

"Don't do this to me. I'm going crazy!"

"Where are you? Sienna!"

"You're just joking with me, right? This is a prank."

"Please, just send me a message."

But my phone would never ring for him again.

We were supposed to grow old together. But as a judge, he had arbitrarily ruled that my kidney should be given to his first love, Scarlett, to save her from her own illness.

I had tried to explain to him that I was suffering from kidney failure. I told him that if I gave up a kidney, I would die.

My husband only roared at me with pure hatred.

"Scarlett is so sick, and you're still here acting jealous and trying to win my attention!"

"Do you even have a heart?"

Under his legal and personal coercion, I was sent to the hospital for the transplant.

In the end, due to the acute failure of my remaining system, I died miserably in a lonely corner of the hospital.

......

While Caleb was waiting outside Scarlett's room, I was lying on a cold operating table, waiting for death in despair.

Tubes were inserted all over my body. The sound of the machines felt like the Grim Reaper's countdown, reminding me it was time to go.

By the time my heart rate monitor turned into a flat line, news came from Scarlett's side that the surgery was a success. The emergency lights in the OR dimmed, and my eyes closed forever.

Perhaps because my resentment was too strong, my soul found its way to Caleb's side.

I watched him holding Scarlett, who had just escaped death. His eyes were red with emotion. My heart sank to the bottom of the ocean.

I wanted to ask Caleb one thing. When we were both pushed into our respective operating rooms at the same time, was there even a single second where he worried about whether I would live or die?

The answer was no. After all, Caleb had taken me to court just to ensure Scarlett got what she needed. He hired the most famous lawyers in the industry, and under his own influence, I lost everything.

When they were removing my kidney, I was in the OR, my back drenched in sweat from the agony. I called him, my voice trembling with a plea.

"Honey, I'm sorry, okay? Please don't let them take my kidney. It hurts so much. I think I'm dying."

I had never acted weak in front of Caleb before. I thought that if I just admitted defeat and accepted all the fake charges he threw at me, he might spare my life for the sake of our five-year marriage.

But Caleb only sneered through the phone.

"Admitting your mistakes is what you should have done long ago. Being able to save Scarlett's life is your only redemption."

"Don't think you can skip out on the apology just because you gave her the kidney. I'm going to settle the score for every single way you've hurt her over the years once she's better."

"You want to die? Fine. But you better apologize to Scarlett before you do!"

I tried to open my cracked lips to deny his accusations, but I had no strength left.

Caleb wasn't done venting. He spat out his final words.

"You honestly make me sick!"

As the call disconnected, my heart went cold. The five years of love I had for him vanished into thin air.

Caleb said I made him sick. But when he married me, he had looked into my eyes and promised to love me forever. He told me I was his first choice, his exception, and his only love.

But once Scarlett came back, he forgot he even had a wife.
