Chapter 2
2
Caleb gently stroked Scarlett's face, looking at her like she was a piece of priceless, fragile porcelain.
"Thank God. You're alive… thank God."
His choked-up voice and bloodshot eyes told me everything. Caleb hadn't slept all night because he was worried about her.
But while he was worrying about Scarlett, did it ever cross his mind that I was already dead?
Scarlett forced her pale lips into a weak smile.
"Caleb, I'm sorry for worrying you. Where's Sienna? Is she still mad at me? I should go apologize to her right now."
Scarlett made a show of trying to sit up. It was so fake that anyone with eyes could see through it, yet Caleb was completely blind.
Sure enough, Caleb gently pressed her back down and patted her head affectionately.
"Silly girl. Sienna is the one who needs to apologize, not you. You're always too kind. That's why people take advantage of you."
The nurse watching them couldn't help but chime in.
"You two really are a devoted couple."
She then looked at Scarlett.
"While you were in surgery, your husband waited in the hallway all night. He didn't leave for a single second."
Scarlett blushed, but Caleb's expression just stiffened. He didn't bother to correct the misunderstanding.
Then, the nurse's tone shifted, and she let out a deep sigh.
"Unlike the patient on the other table next door. She was alone from the moment she came in. No family even came to pick up her body after she died. So tragic."
Caleb's face twitched slightly. A spark of hope ignited in my ghost heart.
If Caleb could just figure out that the "tragic person" was me, would he be merciful enough to handle my funeral?
After a long silence, Caleb just sighed.
"That is indeed quite sad."
My eyes went dim. I laughed at myself. Caleb was so full of Scarlett right now; how could he possibly think of me?
Caleb didn't pursue the topic. He followed the nurse as they wheeled Scarlett back to her private room.
As they passed the operating room where my body still lay, Caleb paused for a moment.
He glanced inside. My cold corpse was lying there, but my feet were toward the door, so he couldn't see my face.
But if he had looked closely, he would have seen the scar on my ankle. It was a scar I got years ago while saving his life.
