Chapter 3

After Caleb and Scarlett entered the room, a man named Quentin came running from the opposite direction, brushing right past Caleb.

Quentin grabbed my hand, his voice shaking. He wanted to stroke my hair, but as his fingers touched my cold forehead, two rows of tears fell.

"You idiot. If only you had married me back then. You wouldn't have ended up dying alone with no one to claim you."

Seeing Quentin's disheveled state made my nose sting. It looked like he had just rushed back from out of state.

Actually, ever since I got married, Quentin had left the city.

The reason he gave me back then was that Caleb couldn't stand him. He didn't want to cause me any unnecessary trouble, so he thought it was best to leave.

I was an orphan, adopted by the Miller family when I was seven. Quentin was my brother in name. He didn't like me at first, but the longer we were together, the better he treated me.

I had broken ties with my adoptive parents for Caleb. They wanted me to marry a business partner. I knew they didn't love me; I was just a bargaining chip to them.

Quentin was the one who helped me escape. As for his feelings for me, I had known about them for a long time.

But I couldn't marry Quentin any more than I could marry Caleb. My adoptive parents would never have allowed it.

Quentin prepared to take my body away. At the same time, Caleb was heading out to get food for Scarlett.

Scarlett had mentioned she suddenly craved a cake from a bakery thirty miles away. Caleb had stood up to go without a moment's hesitation.

When Quentin and Caleb met head-on, my body was covered under a white sheet. Caleb recognized him immediately.

"Step aside."

Quentin's voice was cold and sharp. It made sense. Why would he be polite to the man who had a hand in killing me?

Caleb's expression was complicated. He took a step back out of respect for the dead.

But as Quentin turned to leave, Caleb's eyes fell on my exposed ankle.

"Wait!"

Caleb seemed to remember something and chased after him. "The person who died… who is she to you?"
