Chapter 1

It was my boyfriend's birthday. I brought a gift to the hospital where he worked, hiding behind a curtain to surprise him.

But then I heard his first love ask, "How do you plan to take Gianna's eyes?"

He replied coldly, "I'll stage an accident in three days. As her primary surgeon, I can naturally transplant her eyes to you."

My heart shattered. I remembered him confessing to me right after Shelly got hurt saving him.

He pampered me and praised my beautiful eyes, only to realize it was all a scheme to steal them.

But he didn't know that I was the one who actually saved him back then.

"I know this isn't fair to Gianna, but I really want to see you again." Shelly Jaxon's voice trembled with a hint of sorrow.

"I only treated her well for those eyes. I'll just give her more compensation money later," Xander Hunt comforted her softly.

A sharp pain pierced my heart.

Through the gap in the curtain, I saw Xander lean in and kiss her. Shelly's face flushed with a coy smile.

I stood frozen behind the curtain, my blood running cold as if I had fallen into an abyss.

Tears fell onto the gift box. I had spent a whole year's salary on the Rolex watch he wanted.

Looking at it now, the irony was unbearable.

"I'll take you back," Xander said, tucking a strand of hair behind Shelly's ear.

"Are you in such a hurry to get rid of me because you're afraid Gianna will find me here?"

Xander paused. "I'm just worried about your health. I want you to get some rest."

"Fine," Shelly huffed and turned around. Xander quickly stepped forward, carefully putting his arm around her as they left.

The office fell silent again. I forced myself to endure the agonizing pain and walked toward the Director's office.

"Director, I want to apply for the two-year academic exchange program at the hospital in Chicago."

The Director looked surprised. "Didn't Dr. Hunt refuse to let you go before? Have you changed your mind?"

"This is my life. He doesn't get to make decisions for me."

"If you've made up your mind, then cherish this opportunity. Don't let the hospital down," the Director nodded.

After thanking him, I left the office. When I got home after work, I started packing my clothes.

The doorbell rang urgently. I opened it to find Xander standing there with a frown.

"Why did you apply for that exchange program?" his voice was frantic.

"It's a rare opportunity. I want to improve myself," I replied calmly.

Xander was stunned, unable to believe it. "Gianna, did I do something wrong to make you angry?"

His nervous look made me daze for a moment. In the past, he spoiled me so much that I never thought of leaving him.

But today I realized his care was just a lie to steal my eyes for his little mistress.

I curled my lips. "I just don't want to revolve my life around you anymore."

Xander knit his brows. "I know I might have neglected you lately. I'll make it up to you. Don't be so impulsive, okay?"

"Didn't you say you prepared a surprise for my birthday?"

As he spoke, he spotted the gift box on the table and walked straight inside.

Seeing the watch, his eyes lit up. "Gianna! You actually remembered I wanted this!"

"You took my casual words to heart. That proves how much you love me. You were just joking about leaving, right?"

I snatched the watch back from his hand, my eyes icy cold. "This isn't for you."

He looked baffled. "Gianna, are you kidding me?"

"I'm tired. Let's break up," I said, looking at him coldly.

Xander froze. "Why? What did I do that makes you want to end things?"

"You and..." Before I could finish, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen, and his face instantly darkened. He hurried to the side to answer it.

I watched him coldly. His expression grew solemn. After hanging up, he turned to me.

"I have an emergency. Wait for me to come back."
