Chapter 2
2
The process for my transfer was moving forward. The next day, I went to work as usual.
During a break, I heard colleagues whispering that Shelly Jaxon was admitted for eye pain last night. Xander had stayed by her side all night.
One colleague couldn't help but ask, "Everyone knows Dr. Hunt stayed with Shelly all night. Don't you mind?"
"We've broken up," I said nonchalantly.
The office went silent, everyone looking like they had just heard the biggest news of the year.
"You guys were so in love. What happened?" someone pressed.
"I haven't agreed to the breakup yet." Xander's voice made the room fall into an awkward silence.
I got up to leave, and he chased after me. In the corridor, he blocked my path.
"Gianna, tell me what I did wrong. I can change!"
I let out a cold laugh. "No need. We're done." I turned and walked away quickly.
There were only two days left until Xander's deadline. I had to arrange everything before then.
In the afternoon, I confirmed the transfer details with the Director. I asked him to speed up the paperwork.
I went back to my desk and began organizing my patients' files. I made sure every handover note was clear for my successor.
Just as I took a breath, Xander rushed over and grabbed my hand.
"Are you doing this because you're jealous of Shelly? I promise I'll keep my distance from her. Stop throwing a tantrum!"
I shook him off and gave him a sharp look. "Whatever you do with her has nothing to do with me. Stop harassing me."
Nearby colleagues were whispering and throwing strange looks our way.
Xander felt he was losing face. He leaned in and hissed, "You better come back to me, or I won't let this go easily."
He stomped off. A few close colleagues came to comfort me, and I told them I was fine.
Leaving the hospital after work, I saw Xander again. Before I could react, he lunged at me.
He covered my mouth and dragged me toward his car. I struggled desperately, kicking and trying to pry his fingers off.
But his grip was like iron. He shoved me into the car and locked the doors instantly.
"Xander Hunt, what the hell are you doing!" I screamed.
His voice was cold and detached. "I just want to give your eyes to Shelly. I'll compensate you later. Just help me this once."
I slapped him hard across the face. "Her eyes are precious, but mine aren't?"
He rubbed his cheek, his eyes burning with rage. "It's just your eyes. It's not like I'm taking your life. Don't be so selfish!"
"Then why don't you give her your own damn eyes?"
"Gianna!" Xander roared. "I said I'd make it up to you! I'm taking those eyes today whether you like it or not!"
He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and pressed it over my nose and mouth.
The pungent smell hit me instantly. I thrashed my head, trying to breathe.
But my limbs went numb. I felt my consciousness slipping away into darkness.
