Chapter 1
On the day Vanessa remarried her ex-husband, they just happened to hail my taxi.
She sat in the back, speaking gently to her ex-husband, "Let's not announce our remarriage just yet. Wait until I break up with Luke."
I had been with her for seven years. Just a few days ago, she had agreed to marry me by the end of the year.
I didn't make a scene. I just silently gave up on saving money for our wedding, went back to my hometown, and married the girl who actually loved me.
Later, when she heard about it, she went crazy.
Vanessa sat in the back seat, not even sparing a glance in my direction.
She just held onto Nathan’s arm coquettishly. "Hubby, now that we're remarried, you and Leo can finally be with me every day."
My heart trembled violently. I lost control for a second, causing the car to swerve slightly.
I had painstakingly saved enough money to rent this taxi, starting my part-time job today.
I was full of dreams about making more money so I could marry Vanessa sooner.
But I never expected my very first passengers today would be Vanessa and her ex-husband.
And now, they were remarried.
"What are you doing, driver? Can't you drive properly?"
Vanessa suddenly snapped angrily.
I hadn't told her about driving a taxi, and I was wearing a mask today, so she didn't recognize me.
My hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as I struggled to control my emotions, not saying a word.
Through the rearview mirror, I saw her leaning on Nathan again, her face full of a happy smile.
I hadn't seen a smile like that on her face in a long time.
Recently, we had been stressed about getting married.
Because her family demanded a $50,000 dowry and I didn't have enough, I thought of taking this part-time job.
"But let's not announce our remarriage just yet. Wait until I break up with Luke before we go public."
Vanessa spoke up again.
Nathan paused for a moment.
"I thought you would break up first before remarrying me."
I thought so too.
Even if Vanessa didn't love me anymore, I thought she would at least break up with me beforehand.
Not like this―remarrying her ex-husband while I was fully focused on marrying her.
I felt utterly disgusted.
"Oh, you don't know how much he likes me. I'm afraid he won't be able to accept it and will make a scene."
"It's his birthday soon. I'll make it clear to him then."
Vanessa leaned into Nathan's embrace. I saw clearly that when she said this, there was no guilt on her face.
We had been together for seven years.
Just a few days ago, she told me, "Luke, let's get married at the end of the year."
Her eyes were so gentle then.
Making me believe it was true.
But now I know, she was already thinking about how to get away from me back then.
My chest was filled with pain. I wanted to speak up and question her.
But I couldn't open my mouth.
Probably because I couldn't believe she would really abandon me, or maybe I still held a sliver of fantasy about her.
