Chapter 2

I looked at the GPS. The destination was Golden City Apartments.

My heart trembled violently again.

That was the marital home I bought for Vanessa, spending all my savings from the past seven years.

"Hubby, you can live in Golden City Apartments from now on."

"Luke gave me this house. Since I'm going to break up with him anyway, he won't be living there. It'll be our home from now on."

Vanessa's eyes were filled with anticipation for the future.

When I gave her this house, she had the same look in her eyes.

Back then, I thought she was fantasizing about a future with me.

Nathan was also happy. "Okay, we'll go tidy up a bit first, then go pick up Leo. Leo hasn't seen you in a long time; he misses you."

Leo is Vanessa and Nathan’s son, already eight years old.

Vanessa was once abused by Nathan, and I was the one who saved her.

Because I was a lawyer, I helped her with the lawsuit and defended her.

Seeing her pitiful state, alone, I didn't even charge her, helping her for free.

Later, she kept getting close to me, bringing me meals every day.

On an ordinary night, she confessed to me. Her eyes were so sincere then.

"Lawyer Miller, you saved me when I was at my worst. I think you're a good man. Can you be with me?"

I was moved by her sincerity then. I didn't mind that she was divorced or had a son, so I agreed.

But now, she abandoned me without hesitation.

Thinking of this, I heard Vanessa send me a voice message.

"Luke, I have to go on a business trip today, so I won't be back. Eat well by yourself, okay?"

After finishing, she sighed and complained to Nathan, "Luke is good, but he's too stupid. He doesn't know I've been using him as a stepping stone."

Back then, Vanessa wanted to become a lawyer like me. I brought her into the industry and gave her resources.

Later, she became more and more successful and suggested to me, "Luke, it feels like people aren't coming to you for defense anymore. Why don't you switch careers?"

I listened to her and switched to become a low-level clerk.

And now she has become a famous elite lawyer.

I know now that she approached me from the beginning just to use me as a stepping stone.

I gritted my teeth tightly.

Vanessa, what else is there that I don't know?
