Chapter 3

We soon arrived at Golden City Apartments.

Vanessa happily took Nathan's arm and got out of the car. I followed them.

I watched with my own eyes as she took Nathan into the marital home I bought for her.

She didn't close the door because there were many of her friends inside.

"Congratulations, Vanessa! After chasing Nathan for over a year, you finally remarried."

The voice of Vanessa's best friend came from inside the room.

Hiding in the hallway, I froze completely.

I still didn't understand. Even if she used me as a stepping stone, she should have dumped me when her career took off.

Why remarry her ex-husband now, under the premise of marrying me?

Seven years. Seven whole years. I didn't believe she had no feelings for me at all.

"But aren't you afraid Luke will find out?"

The voice inside continued.

"He saved up hard to buy this house, and I heard he borrowed money from many people for the renovations."

Vanessa scoffed. "He did it voluntarily. He gave it to me, so this house is mine."

"I plan to break up with him on his birthday. He'll know everything then."

"Why on that day?"

Vanessa was silent for a while, then said, "Because that's the day he looks forward to the most. Since I'm going to leave him, I have to be cruel so he won't pester me in the future."

Her words were like iron chains wrapping tightly around my heart, tightening little by little.

We had agreed long ago to get our marriage license on my 33rd birthday and hold the wedding at the end of the year.

To marry her, I worked day and night.

But her? She gave everything I worked for to another man.
