The two families got along perfectly. Since the marriage benefited everyone, the engagement was settled quickly.

My sister, Myla, looked radiant these days. It was like she had been given a second chance at life.

She spent her time filming lifestyle vlogs and shopping. She was already practicing for her role as a wealthy socialite.

I, however, was buried in work at the family company.

The stress was constant, and I looked exhausted compared to her.

Myla walked into my office one afternoon, swinging a designer bag. A bodyguard followed her, carrying piles of shopping bags.

I had to admit, Silas was generous. He knew exactly how to buy a girl’s affection.

She casually rested her hand on my desk. I immediately saw the diamond ring on her finger.

It was massive and blindingly bright.

“I told him a simple band would be fine,” she sighed, though her smile was huge. “But Silas insisted that only this was worthy of me. It’s so big, it’s actually kind of inconvenient to wear.”

She pointed at the bags behind her. “You’re so busy, Sera. You probably don't have time to shop. Silas picked these out for me. See anything you like? I might let you have something.”

She was trying to rub it in my face, but I didn't care.

I glanced at my watch and stood up. “No thanks. I have a board meeting to get to.”

As I walked away, I heard her mocking laugh. “Someone’s clearly dying of jealousy!”

“What’s the point of working so hard?” she called out. “Marrying the right man is the real path to success. Too bad you missed out!”

I kept walking. Did she really think a few gifts meant she had won?

Silas had barely even started showing his true colors yet.
