Chapter 1

My wife of six years, Fiona, brought her first love back from abroad and into our home.

I didn't object. I even ignored my burning fever to personally get the guest room ready for him.

Fiona looked at me with deep suspicion.

"You're usually such a clingy, jealous husband," she said. "Why are you being so reasonable today?"

I kept my eyes down, my voice flat and calm.

"I was wrong before. You're just friends, and I should be more understanding."

Fiona nodded, clearly satisfied. She then told me she would be sleeping in his room tonight to keep him company.

I simply nodded and agreed.

Since I was already preparing to leave her, it didn't matter who she brought home anymore.

1.

After I agreed, Fiona couldn't hide the shock on her face.

"Sian, did you take the wrong meds today? Why are you suddenly being so... so..."

She struggled for a long time but couldn't find the right word.

I didn't care. I wished her a cold goodnight and headed toward my room to sleep.

Fiona's phone chimed with a notification, and she immediately called out to stop me.

"Don't go to sleep yet. Xavier is hungry. Go make him some pasta. No garlic, no onions."

I paused for a moment but didn't turn around.

"Order him some takeout. I'm exhausted."

My refusal made Fiona visibly annoyed, though she quickly masked it.

Her tone turned contemptuous.

"And here I thought you finally matured. You're still just as petty and calculating as ever."

I didn't argue. I just walked into my room and shut the door.

A moment later, I heard a loud knocking at the front door.

My phone buzzed immediately after.

I didn't even need to look to know it was Fiona telling me to go grab the delivery.

I closed my eyes and ignored it.

The knocking continued, and my phone wouldn't stop buzzing.

During our years of marriage, Fiona had grown used to me handling every little thing in the house.

Even now, she expected me to be her errand boy for a simple delivery.

Before, I was happy to take care of her life.

But now, I just wanted to rest.

The constant ringing was starting to irritate me.

I turned my phone off and tried to drift into sleep.

It wasn't long before Fiona kicked the bedroom door open in a rage.

She ripped the blanket off me and glared down with icy eyes.

"Sian, are you deaf? You didn't answer your phone, and then you actually turned it off?"

I looked at her with feigned confusion.

"Oh, is it off? I have a fever. I must have fallen into a deep sleep."

I picked up the phone and fumbled with the buttons.

Fiona saw the dark screen and huffed with impatience.

"Make sure you keep your phone charged next time."

She slammed the door on her way out.

She didn't acknowledge my fever at all.

I let out a self-deprecating laugh.

Just as I was about to close my eyes again, Fiona came back.

"Where are the bowls and silverware kept?"

She had lived in this house for so long, yet she didn't even know where the basic kitchenware was.

My throat was swollen and sore, so I whispered the location to her.

Fiona thought I was playing games. After asking twice and not hearing me clearly, her face darkened.

"Sian, are you a mute? Why are you whispering?"

At that moment, Xavier walked in from the hallway.

The moment Fiona saw him, her expression turned incredibly soft.

"You have a cold, why are you up? Go back to bed before you get worse."

Xavier gave her a sweet smile.

"I'm fine. I just missed you and wanted to see what was taking so long."

He glanced at me over her shoulder.

His eyes were full of smug triumph.

But his voice sounded nothing but concerned.

"Is Sian feeling okay? He looks really pale."

Fiona spared me a brief, uncaring glance.

"Don't worry about him. He's always been weak. A little fever won't kill him."

So she did know I was burning up.

She just didn't give a damn.

Fiona gently pushed Xavier back toward the guest room to rest.

I lay in bed for a while longer before forcing my heavy body to sit up.

I limped to the living room to find some fever reducers.

I searched the first-aid kit for a long time but couldn't find the new prescription the doctor gave me today.

Fiona happened to walk by, and I asked her where the medicine was.

She said she threw it away.

I looked at her, completely baffled. "Why?"

Fiona acted like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Xavier is allergic to that specific brand. I was worried he might take the wrong one by mistake."

I gritted my teeth, my voice shaking.

"That was my prescription from the hospital today."

Fiona didn't like my tone. Her face hardened into a scowl.

"Can't you just go buy a different brand? Stop yelling at me over such a small thing!"

I couldn't help but laugh out loud. It was a sound of pure helplessness.

"Fiona, I'm allergic to every other kind of fever medicine..."

The one she threw out was the only one I could safely take.

Fiona rolled her eyes.

"You're so dramatic. Who is allergic to basic medicine?"

Even though I had already decided to stop loving her, her blatant disgust still stung.

I grabbed my jacket to head out to the pharmacy.

Fiona naturally started giving me orders again.

"While you're out, buy Xavier some new clothes. His skin is sensitive, he can't wear..."

I slammed the door before she could finish her sentence.

In times like these, the difference between love and indifference is glaring.

Since she didn't love me, there was no reason for us to stay together.
