Chapter 3
3.
Early the next morning, I left the house.
I took a cab to a remote, high-security research facility.
When I handed my credentials to the guard, his entire demeanor changed.
He spoke with deep respect.
"Please wait one moment, sir. I'll notify the director immediately."
I gave a calm nod.
A few minutes later, a man in a white lab coat came running toward me.
"Sian! Does this mean you've accepted my offer?"
"Our institute desperately needs a talent like you."
The man was Xander Hayes, an older guy from my childhood neighborhood.
He was currently leading top-secret biological research.
I had originally chosen biology because of his influence.
It was also the reason Fiona looked down on me.
She always said my degree was useless and didn't bring in enough money.
When I first told her I wanted to go into R&D, she looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Sian, are you going to abandon me for your career too?"
Seeing her vulnerable for the first time, I surrendered immediately.
Later, I found out Xavier had rejected her to move abroad for his own career.
Even knowing that truth, I hadn't regretted my choice.
As long as I was with Fiona, I was willing to be a "nobody" for the rest of my life.
Xander had tried to convince me many times to come back.
He told me I was wasting my potential and that I could change the field.
I had turned him down every time because I didn't want to leave her.
Joining the institute meant I could only see my family once a month.
I couldn't bear to be away from Fiona.
Eventually, Xander had left me an envelope and told me to find him if I ever changed my mind.
Thinking of this, I gave him a firm nod.
"Yes, I'm in."
Xander's face lit up with pure joy.
"Give me two days to get the final clearances. I'll send a car for you then."
After leaving Xander, I went straight to a law firm to draft divorce papers.
The lawyer asked about the division of assets.
I hesitated for a second. "Fifty-fifty."
Fiona's company was in her name, but I had secured most of their major contracts.
I still remember the day I landed our biggest deal. Fiona had hugged me, crying.
"Sian! You're my lucky charm! Everything we have is because of you."
Years later, she called me the biggest loser in the office.
With the papers in hand, I went to the company to have one last talk with her.
As I approached her office, I noticed her secretary wasn't at her desk.
I thought Fiona might be out, but then I heard a sound from inside.
It was Fiona's voice, thick with lust.
"Is the door locked? What if Sian..."
She was cut off by Xavier's muffled voice.
"I checked his office. He isn't back yet."
"Fiona, I've missed you so much..."
"Mmm... Xavier, I'm married... Ah... be gentle..."
Through the crack in the door, I saw Fiona with her shirt half-off and her skirt pushed up.
Xavier's hands were clamped onto her waist, controlling her movements.
Fiona was whimpering for him to slow down.
Xavier looked up and caught my eye through the gap.
He flashed me a triumphant, wicked grin.
Then, he moved even faster and harder.
Fiona gasped, letting out a sharp cry of pleasure.
When she accidentally glanced toward the door, her entire body went rigid.
She scrambled off Xavier's lap, her face contorting with panic.
"Sian... What are you doing here? I thought you weren't coming in today!"
I looked at her, noting the fresh marks all over her skin.
A smile that felt like ice spread across my face.
"I came to discuss the divorce. I didn't realize I'd be getting a free show."
Fiona's eyes widened.
"You want a divorce?"
I tossed the papers onto her desk and spoke coldly.
"Yes. Fiona, we're done."
That's everything available right now.
