Chapter 1 The Ghost Of The Crags

The wind in the northern crags did not just blow; it bit straight through wool and skin, testing how long a body could last before giving up. I pulled my thin blanket tighter around my shoulders, watching my breath turn to frost in the dim light of dawn. Today was my eighteenth birthday. In any other pack, it was the day a girl finally met her wolf, heard the second heartbeat in her chest, and stepped into her true place under the moon.

Here, in the frozen shadows of the Bloodmoon territory, I knew what I was. Nothing.

"Elowen!"

The sharp bark of a voice cut through the howling wind. I flinched, my grip tightening on the wooden bucket in my hands. That wasn't just any pack member. That was Brenna, one of the senior pack enforcers, her boots crunching hard against the frozen rime outside my small stone hut.

The heavy wooden door pushed open without a knock, letting in a gust of freezing air that made me shiver down to my bones. Brenna stood there in heavy leather armor, her chest puffed out with authority, her eyes locked onto me with pure disgust.

"Get up and move," Brenna snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. "Right now."

"Move where?" I asked, my voice coming out raspy and small. "I haven't finished hauling the morning water from the creek."

"Drop the bucket," Brenna said, stepping closer and kicking the wooden pail so hard it tipped over, spilling icy water across the packed dirt floor. "The Alpha is here. He crossed the border an hour ago with his elite guard."

My heart gave a hard, painful lurch against my ribs. "The Alpha? Darius? Why would he come to the northern crags?"

"To claim his fated mate, you idiot," Brenna spat, her lips curling back in a cruel sneer.

"The Moon Goddess paired him with someone, and the elders tracked the scent straight to this frozen wasteland. Now clean the mud off your face and get out to the central clearing before I drag you by your hair."

Panic flared hot and sharp in my throat. Every wolf born in the Bloodmoon Pack knew the name Darius Blackthorn. He was ruthless, powerful, and utterly intolerant of weakness. The thought of standing before him me, the wolfless pariah who couldn't even shift made my stomach turn over. "I didn't ask for a mate," I whispered, backing away until my spine hit the cold stone wall.

"Nobody cares what you asked for," Brenna hissed, grabbing my arm in a bruising grip and hauling me toward the door. "An Alpha does not wait. Move your feet."

The walk to the central clearing felt like a march to the gallows. The wind whipped my hair across my face, but I didn't dare pull away from Brenna's iron grip. As we reached the edge of the camp, the whispers started. Dozens of pack members had gathered in the snow, their breath pluming in the freezing air, their eyes sharp and judgmental. They pointed at me, whispering behind their hands, shaking their heads at the sight of the ragged, freezing outcast dragged before their ruler.

And then I saw him.

Darius Blackthorn stood in the center of the clearing like a statue carved from dark marble. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and radiating an effortless, terrifying authority that made every lesser wolf bow their head. His dark hair blew slightly in the wind, and his eyes the piercing amber of an apex predator scanned the crowd with bored impatience. Flanking him were half a dozen elite warriors, their postures rigid and ready for violence.

Brenna shoved me forward hard enough that I stumbled, catching myself on my hands in the freezing mud at Darius's feet. The silence that fell over the clearing was absolute. You could hear the wind howling through the pine trees, nothing else.

I pushed myself up onto my knees, wiping a streak of wet mud from my cheek. My chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked breaths. I kept my gaze fixed on the snow, knowing the rules. A pariah did not look an Alpha in the eye.

"Is this it?" Darius's voice cut through the cold air like a razor. It was deep, rich, and dripping with absolute disdain.

"Yes, Alpha," one of the elders spoke up nervously from the side. "The scent trails and the birth records confirm it. Elowen Thorne. She reached her eighteenth year today."

Slowly, heavy boots crunched on the frozen ground as Darius stepped closer. The sheer weight of his presence pressed down on my shoulders, making it hard to breathe. A heavy, musky scent of pine and charred wood washed over me the unmistakable mark of a dominant male.

"Look at me," Darius commanded.

My breath caught. I slowly raised my chin, forcing my eyes up to meet his.

Up close, Darius was breathtaking and terrifying all at once. His jawline was sharp as a blade, his lips pressed into a hard, unforgiving line. But as his amber eyes locked onto mine, the dark confidence in his expression shifted. The heavy air between us snapped with a sudden, electric pop the invisible shock of the fated bond recognizing its other half.

For a fraction of a second, his breath hitched. His nostrils flared as he drank in my scent, and his wolf stirred beneath his skin, desperate to claim what the Goddess had provided.

Then, reality hit him.

He looked closer. He looked past the wild hair, past the ragged clothes, and straight into my eyes, searching for the answering amber glow of an inner wolf. He waited for the growl of a she-wolf recognizing her mate.

There was nothing. Just empty, human brown eyes staring back at him. No wolf. No power. Just the shivering outcast of the northern crags.

Darius's face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated revulsion. The brief spark of mate-bond hunger died instantly, replaced by a dark, violent fury that made him step back as if he had touched something diseased.

"A wolfless parasite," Darius whispered, the words carrying across the silent clearing like a death sentence. "The Moon Goddess paired me with a phantom. A waste of blood and bone."

"Alpha, please," I managed to choke out, my voice trembling violently as humiliation burned hot tears down my cheeks. "I didn't ask for this. I didn't know" "Silence," Darius roared, the sound vibrating in my chest.

Before I could blink, Darius pulled a heavy hunting knife from the sheath at his hip. The steel gleamed cold and sharp under the gray winter sky.

The crowd of pack members gasped, murmuring rising in waves. Even his elite guards shifted uneasily, though none dared to speak.

Darius didn't hesitate. With a swift, brutal motion, he dragged the blade sharply across the palm of his left hand. Bright, crimson blood welled up instantly, spilling over his life-line. The sacred mate bond the ancient, mystical tie that was supposed to join two souls together forever pulsed between us, heavy and agonizingly real.

"I reject you," Darius shouted, his voice echoing off the frozen mountains.

"No!" I cried out, lifting a hand instinctively.

"I, Darius Blackthorn, Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack, sever this filth from my soul," he snarled.

He didn't just speak the words; he slammed his bleeding hand down onto the frozen earth right beside my knee, letting his life-force bleed directly into the dirt, effectively draining and killing the sacred bond before it could take root. The agony of the severance hit my chest like a physical blow, knocking the wind straight out of my lungs with a sharp gasp.

"You are nothing to me," Darius spat down at me, wiping his bloody palm roughly on his trousers. "A broken parasite has no place in the Bloodmoon Pack. Take her out of my sight and throw her into the mud where she belongs."

Two enforcers stepped forward instantly, grabbing my arms and dragging me backward through the freezing slush as the pack watched in cold silence. Darius turned his broad back on me without a backward glance, signaling his guards to follow as he walked away.

As Darius turned his back, Elowen's chest began to burn from the inside out with a terrifying, blinding heat that cracks the frozen ground beneath her.
