Chapter 2 The Poisoned Soil

The enforcers dropped me like dead weight into the freezing slush of the northern crags. Their heavy boots crunched away, leaving me alone in the biting wind. The pain in my chest was blinding, a hot and jagged tearing sensation where Darius had severed the mate bond. I curled into a tight ball, pressing my forehead against the crusted ice, gasping for air that felt like broken glass in my throat. "Let me freeze," I muttered into the dirt, my teeth chattering so hard my jaw ached. "Just let it end." But the ice beneath me didn't stay cold. A sudden, fierce heat exploded deep behind my ribs. It didn't feel like warmth; it felt like swallowing fire. I arched my back with a sharp, ragged gasp, my fingers clawing into the frozen mud. The mental blocks that had kept me small, silent, and broken for eighteen long years cracked wide open. A primal roar tore itself from my throat a sound that was too deep, too heavy, and too ancient to belong to a human girl. My bones shifted beneath my skin, snapping and realigning in a dizzying wave of agony. Every drop of blood in my veins burned as if I were standing in the middle of a blazing inferno. I squeezed my eyes shut, crying out as the invisible cage holding back my soul shattered into a million pieces. The sky above spun, the wind roaring louder in my ears until it drowned out everything else, replaced by the terrifying, thundering pulse of an absolute, overwhelming power waking up inside my blood. Miles away, inside the warm and heavily guarded walls of the Bloodmoon packhouse, the world was beginning to die. Alpha Darius Blackthorn paced back and forth across the polished mahogany floor of his warroom, a heavy scowl dragging down the corners of his mouth. He slammed his fist down onto the map table, rattling the silver goblets resting near the edge. "Explain it to me again," Darius snapped, glaring at the senior enforcer standing near the door. "How does an entire hunting patrol lose their tracking scent inside our own northern border?" The enforcer swallowed hard, his face pale, his hands trembling slightly where they hung at his sides. "I don't know, Alpha. It's not just the scent. The woods... something is wrong with the woods." "Wrong how?" Darius demanded, his amber eyes flashing with dangerous irritation. "The soil, sir," the enforcer muttered, shifting his weight uneasily. "An hour after you returned from the crags, the ground along the northern perimeter turned black. It's rotting. The grass is dying down to the roots, and the deer, the wolves, even the pack hounds... they won't go near it. They're howling at nothing, tearing at their own fur like they've gone mad." Darius let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh, though a flicker of unease crossed his sharp features. "Mad? A pack of wolves doesn't go mad because of bad dirt. Double the patrols and clear out" He didn't get to finish the command. A sudden, violent shockwave tore through the air, vibrating straight through the stone foundation of the packhouse. Darius staggered, grabbing the edge of the map table as his knees buckled. A suffocating pressure heavy, freezing, and utterly merciless crushed down on the room, making it impossible to draw a full breath. Across the territory, the packhouse doors flew open. Shouts of panic echoed from the courtyard as Bloodmoon warriors dropped to their hands and knees, choking on the thick, unnatural smog that rolled in from the north. The sacred bond Darius had severed so carelessly didn't just die in the dirt; the cosmic penalty for breaking a true mate hit the pack like a falling mountain. The metaphysical tether snapped backward, whipping through the air like a rusted chain pulled taut, slamming straight into Darius's chest with the force of a physical blow. Back in the northern crags, the ice had melted away into a steaming crater of water and ash. I stood slowly to my feet. The biting wind died down the moment I moved, swirling gently around my ankles as if it were afraid to touch me. My ragged clothes hung loosely from my frame, but I didn't feel the cold anymore. I lifted my chin, blinking open my eyes to the gray winter sky. The brown of my human eyes was gone. In their place burned a pair of solid, glowing silver orbs that pierced through the shadows like twin moons. The power humming beneath my skin was staggering, a living, breathing force that demanded blood and retribution. I looked down toward the southern horizon, toward the grand territory of the Bloodmoon Pack where Darius sat on his stolen throne. The metaphysical chain hummed violently between us, tight and heavy, tethering his collapsing sanity directly to my awakening. I curled my fingers into fists, a cold, empty smile touching the corners of my lips as I tasted the fear echoing across the bond from miles away. "I am coming back," I whispered into the wind, letting the promise carry across the rotting soil for every drop of stolen blood. Just as Darius collapses in his warroom, choking on the phantom agony of a starving beast.
