Chapter 3 The Engineered Trap

The heavy wooden floorboards of the Bloodmoon archives did not creak under my boots. Every step I took felt light, almost frictionless, as if the air itself was parting to let me pass. Three years had turned the freezing outcast of the northern crags into a ghost wrapped in midnight silk, draped in an anonymity more lethal than any blade.

Isolde Ravencroft's voice echoed softly in the back of my mind, a steady, chilling reminder of why I was standing in the very heart of the man who thought he had broken me. "Look for the iron ledger, Elowen. The one they keep locked away from the general history. That is where they hide the truth of what you are."

My fingers brushed against the spine of a massive, leather-bound book tucked deep within the restricted alcove. The air inside the archive smelled of dust, old parchment, and the lingering, metallic tang of ancient blood. I pulled the ledger free, carrying it over to the flickering candlelight on the oak reading desk.

The pages turned with a dry, rustling whisper. I scanned columns of cramped handwriting, birth records, and generational lineage charts that mapped out the Bloodmoon bloodline back centuries. But it wasn't until my eyes landed on a section labeled Anomalous Bloodlines & Regulatory Contracts that my breath hitched.

I traced my gloved finger down the page, reading the dense, clinical legal prose.

The White Wolf lineage, the text read, dated over a century ago, possesses an unregulated metabolic output capable of inciting systemic combustion within standard alpha vessels. To ensure the dominance of the Bloodmoon Alpha line without risk of internal incineration, a permanent biological anchor must be established.

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. I kept reading, every word feeling like a physical blow to my chest.

The fated bond is not a spontaneous manifestation of the Moon Goddess's grace, but an engineered genetic override. By introducing a synthesized chemical tether at the age of maturity, the designated vessel will act as a continuous biological drain, siphoning the raw, unbridled power of the White Wolf into the Alpha bloodline.

It wasn't fate. It wasn't divine design.

My entire existence the cold, the starvation, the decades of being treated as a systemic contagion because my body refused to wake a wolf was a lie. I wasn't defective. I was a battery. A engineered reservoir designed to bleed my power dry so Darius's lineage could sit comfortably on their throne without burning from the inside out.

"A biological drain," I whispered, the words tasting like ash on my tongue. The simmering rage that had been dormant in my chest since the day of the rejection flared into a blinding, white-hot inferno. Darius hadn't pushed me away in genuine disgust. When his amber eyes had locked onto mine in the snow three years ago, his wolf hadn't just smelled a pariah it had smelled the sudden, terrifying awakening of the very power their family had suppressed for generations. His public rejection, the blade across his palm, the cruelty in his voice it wasn't hatred. It was panic. A desperate, terrified defense mechanism to sever a connection that was about to blow up in his face.

And the pathetic, agonizing "regret" that had driven him to hunt for me months later? It wasn't love. It was the frantic, clawing withdrawal of an addict whose supply had been ripped away, leaving his soul to rot from the inside out.

I flipped another page, my jaw tightening until my teeth ached. My gaze locked onto a registry entry from nearly twenty years ago. There, stamped in faded black ink next to a familiar name, was the confirmation I needed.

My mother's name.

They hadn't just suppressed me. They had done it to her, too. Generation after generation of White Wolves locked away in the freezing crags, kept weak, kept ignorant, all to fuel the parasitic hunger of the Bloodmoon Alpha line.

Before I could process the full weight of the revelation, a sudden, violent sound echoed from the corridor outside the archive doors.

It wasn't the measured, heavy tread of a guard on patrol. It was erratic, heavy, and frantic the desperate scramble of claws and boots against stone.

"No... no, no, no," a ragged, weeping voice sobbed from just outside the heavy wooden door, the sound muffled by raw, tearing breaths. "Where is it? Where is the scent? It's burning gods, it's burning from the inside"

The sound of fingernails scraping frantically against the outer wall sent a chill down my spine. It was a sound stripped of all authority, all dominance, all pride. It was the sound of a apex predator unraveling into a rabid animal.

Darius.

My breath caught in my throat. I stood frozen beside the reading desk as heavy, disjointed thuds slammed against the door, my former mate weeping hysterically in the dark hallway as the agonizing withdrawal of his stolen power finally drove him completely out of his mind.

That's everything available right now.
