Chapter 1

1.

"Miss Jenna, the pseudo-death service you booked with us is fully arranged. This is the contract. Please sign here."

I looked at the agreement pushed toward me.

【Client: Jenna Sinclair.

Method of Death: Falling from a mountain peak, body consumed by wild animals, no remains.

Time of Death: One week from now.】

One week later would be my fifth wedding anniversary with Gavin Sterling.

It was also the day I planned to stage my death and leave him forever.

Our life together started on that date, so let it end on that date too.

After signing the papers, I walked out and saw a live interview of Gavin playing on a giant screen.

The host asked, "Mr. Sterling, you are so young and successful. What is the secret to your success?"

Gavin raised his left hand, pointing at the wedding band on his ring finger. "The secret is that I have a wonderful wife."

The host was stunned for a moment. "Oh? I thought you would share your analysis of the industry's future."

"None of that matters. All the wealth I own combined isn't worth a single strand of my wife's hair."

"Your wife is truly lucky..."

On the screen, Gavin checked his watch and smiled at the camera. "Sorry, I need to interrupt the interview. It's almost time. I'd like to use your live broadcast to say something to my wife."

"Of course, Mr. Sterling. Please."

Gavin's voice grew even more tender. "Jenna, I just had someone buy you some hot ginger honey tea. It should arrive soon. Drink it and get some sleep. I'll come home after work to massage your stomach."

Several girls gathered around the screen, letting out sighs of envy.

"Who exactly is Mr. Sterling's wife? How did she get a man like that to be so devoted to her?"

"It's so sweet. I'm dying of jealousy."

The air was filled with voices of admiration.

As the person they were talking about, I only curled my lips into a mocking smirk.

Everyone thought I had saved the galaxy in my past life to marry a man as rare as Gavin Sterling.

I used to think so too.

But nobody knew that Gavin kept another woman on the side.

We had been married for five years, and Gavin had been keeping her for four and a half.

Every time he said he was going on a business trip, he was actually at that woman's place, losing himself in lust.

I still remembered the first time I saw those videos. It felt like ten thousand needles were piercing my heart, pulling out, and piercing it again.

In the end, my heart was left shattered and beyond repair.

I also remembered when I was bullied in school as a kid. Gavin stood in front of me and taught those bullies a lesson.

He told me, "Don't be afraid. I'll protect you from now on."

There was another time when we were driving and a runaway truck swerved toward us.

Gavin's first instinct was to throw himself over me to shield me. He spent over six months in the hospital and almost became a vegetable.

When he woke up, the first thing he asked the nurse was, "Is Jenna okay?"

Only after the nurse confirmed I was fine did he breathe a sigh of relief. "As long as Jenna is okay, nothing else matters."

It was from that moment that I completely fell in love with this man who was willing to give his life for me.

I didn't understand how he could love me while simultaneously sleeping with another woman without any hesitation.

I guess a man's sex and love really can be separated.

I touched the wedding ring on my finger and slowly took it off.

Just then, I saw a disabled man begging on the street. His broken bowl held only a few coins.

I walked over and dropped the ring into his bowl.

"Go sell this. It's enough to buy a small house and start a little business."

The man thanked me profusely.

Actually, I was being modest.

That ring was custom-made by a famous designer. The diamond alone was worth millions.

But now, I didn't want it anymore.

If a wedding ring symbolized love and loyalty, then mine was now worthless.

My phone rang. It was Gavin.

"Jenna, where are you? The delivery person for the ginger tea arrived, but they said you weren't home."

His tone was urgent, sounding as if he were truly worried.

I simply said, "I just went for a walk."

"Where are you now? I'll come pick you up immediately."

"No need. I'm heading back now."

"No, it's your period today. I'm not comfortable with you being alone."

Gavin arrived quickly, taking less than five minutes.

He hurried out of the car, took off his coat, and draped it over my shoulders, pulling me into his arms. "Why are you wearing so little? You can't catch a cold during your time of the month."

I looked up in his arms and saw several red hickeys around his Adam's apple.

Fresh ones.

There were even teeth marks.

He smelled like a woman's perfume.

It turned out that before his interview today, he had just come from Lila Brooks's bed.

Gavin rubbed my fingers and suddenly asked in surprise, "Jenna, where is your wedding ring?"
