Chapter 3
3.
Gavin thought about it and nodded. "Okay, we'll open our surprises for each other then. It'll be more meaningful."
I suddenly wanted to see Gavin's face when he heard of my death and saw the divorce papers.
Would it be shock, confusion, or joy?
Gavin coaxed me, "I heard there's a good movie out. Want to go see it?"
I didn't want to go.
But the theater he mentioned was right next to our old high school.
That was the place where Gavin first confessed his love to me.
During our student days, we spent countless romantic moments on the street behind the school. That street witnessed our most loving days.
Since we started there, we might as well end there.
When we got to the theater, it was crowded.
Gavin kept his arm around me, shielding me from the surrounding crowd.
Several girls in the crowd recognized him.
"Oh my god, isn't that Mr. Sterling! The girl he's holding must be his wife. She's so pretty!"
"Ugh, why are there men as good as Mr. Sterling? Handsome and loyal."
"They really match. They look so good together..."
Gavin protected me all the way to our seats.
He thoughtfully helped me take off my coat and held it for him.
The theater manager walked over subserviently, holding a hand warmer and a cup of ginger tea.
"Mr. Sterling, we heard Mrs. Sterling is having her special time of the month. We've prepared these as you requested. Is there anything else you need?"
Gavin took them.
He placed the hand warmer on my lower belly and handed me the tea. "The temperature is perfect. Jenna, have some?"
I accepted his care mechanically, not saying a word the whole time.
Gavin frowned slightly and told the manager, "Go get some snacks. Not too oily, not too spicy, and not too sweet. Jenna doesn't like those."
"Of course, right away."
The manager ran off.
The movie's intro began to play on the big screen.
Just then, a woman walked up to me and whispered, "Excuse me, my seat is inside. Could you let me through?"
The lights were out, so I didn't recognize her at first. I just quickly made a path.
It wasn't until she passed me and then Gavin that I realized her voice was so familiar.
She was the girl from the video, Lila Brooks.
A second later, Lila's soda cup tilted, spilling the entire drink onto Gavin's lap.
"Oh... I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."
Lila spoke while pulling out tissues to wipe him down.
But as she wiped, her hand started moving to the wrong places.
It was his belly that was wet, but her hand kept going lower and lower, pressing down playfully.
At the same time, I felt the arm around my shoulder tighten suddenly.
His whole body became stiff.
From the corner of my eye, I looked at Gavin's lap. Lila's hand was underneath while Gavin's hand was on top, gripping her wrist hard as if warning her to stop.
But Lila kept smiling, her hand moving with just the right amount of pressure. "Sir, should I buy you a new pair of pants?"
"No need." His voice was already turning raspy.
The movie started.
It was an animated film with cute animals and a funny plot.
But I couldn't watch any of it.
Ten minutes into the movie, Gavin suddenly stood up. "Jenna, the manager might not know what snacks you like. I'll go check."
He was still holding my coat.
He draped the coat over his arm to hide the physical reaction in his lower body.
As soon as Gavin left, Lila stood up and followed him out.
As she passed me, she smirked contemptuously and glanced at me.
Her eyes seemed to say: See? He still chose me.
Five minutes later, I received a text: 【Women's Restroom.】
I quickly left the theater and went to the restroom at the end of the hall.
From the first stall of the women's room came a man's suppressed groans and a woman's soft pleas.
The woman was undoubtedly Lila.
And the man's voice was even more familiar.
I felt frozen to the spot, unable to move.
The noise in the stall grew louder, and the woman let out a sharp cry.
Then I heard Gavin chuckle. "Can't take it already? You followed me to the theater just for this?"
Lila whimpered, half-crying and half-laughing. "I missed you. I just didn't want to see you with her."
Gavin's voice turned slightly cold. "I can grant you anything else, but our business must not happen in front of Jenna. You crossed the line today."
"Fine, I know. But don't you think it's exciting in a dark theater like this?"
Gavin gave a soft laugh. "A little."
"Then tonight... shall we continue?"
Gavin's voice was incredibly hoarse. "I'll buy tickets later. The midnight show."
"The last row. We won't have to hide in the bathroom. We can do it right in the seats..."
The theater manager hurried over from a distance.
He wasn't carrying snacks, but a small square box.
He whispered outside the women's room, "Mr. Sterling, I've bought the protection for you."
The movement inside paused briefly, and Gavin's figure appeared at the door.
I ducked behind a pillar, my heart racing.
I heard Gavin chuckle. "That was fast."
"Of course. The movie is limited, only three hours. I can't let anything ruin your big night."
Gavin sounded satisfied. "Take good care of Jenna. Don't let her notice anything, understand?"
"Don't worry, Mr. Sterling. Mrs. Sterling looks like a very simple girl. Those girls are the easiest to fool. She'll believe whatever you say."
I practically fled the scene.
Back in my theater seat, I allowed myself to cry for a few minutes. Then I forced myself to stop.
This was the last time.
The last time I would ever cry for Gavin Sterling.
Actually, I wasn't crying for Gavin. I was crying for the pure-hearted boy in my memory who only had eyes for me.
The current Gavin was no longer that boy.
Since he wasn't him, I didn't want him anymore.
That's everything available right now.
