Chapter 2
2.
I pulled my hand directly out of his palm.
"I might have accidentally lost it while I was out today."
Gavin immediately took out his phone to dial a number. "I'll have people look for it right away."
I shook my head. "No need. Just let it be lost."
"How can we just let it go? That ring is our wedding band. It's the proof of our love."
Proof of our love?
Our love had long been disfigured by his repeated betrayals.
I smiled. "It's just a piece of jewelry. It can't guarantee love."
Gavin said, "A diamond is the hardest substance. It represents my eternal heart for you."
"What if one day you betray me?"
"Impossible."
"I'm just saying, what if."
Gavin looked into my eyes, his gaze sincere and solemn. He made a vow. "If I ever betray you, may my heart be pierced by a thousand arrows and may I die a miserable death."
I turned my face away, not wanting to see his fake deep affection.
Back when I still loved him, if I heard him make such a serious vow, I would have immediately covered his mouth.
I would even feel guilty for pushing him to the point of swearing such things.
But now that I didn't love him, those words sounded like a joke.
"Jenna," Gavin whispered, hugging me from behind with a hint of grievance. "I feel like your mood hasn't been right lately. You've been very cold to me."
"I haven't."
"You have," Gavin insisted. "Jenna, is it because I've been too busy to spend time with you? Are you mad at me?"
"I said I'm not. Let go of me..."
"I won't," Gavin held me tighter. "Next week is our fifth anniversary. Jenna, I've prepared a surprise for you..."
Just then, his phone rang.
Gavin let go of me almost instantly and glanced at his phone.
From my angle, I saw him smirk playfully. The look in his eyes became suggestive as he stared at the screen.
He quickly typed a reply, then turned to me with a fake apologetic look. "Jenna, an emergency came up at the office. I have to head over now."
I still had a shred of hope. "When will you be back?"
Gavin wrapped his arm around my waist and kissed my forehead. "I might not come back tonight. I'll bring your favorite pastries tomorrow morning, okay?"
Gavin left.
His tablet was still sitting on the living room sofa.
I picked it up and realized his messaging app was still logged in.
Two minutes ago, a woman labeled as "Little Nympho" sent him a picture.
In the photo, she was wearing a revealing bunny girl outfit.
Black fishnet stockings, bright red high heels.
Her eyes were blurred with lust, her cheeks flushed, and she was licking her own finger.
【Gavin: Want it again?】
【Little Nympho: When Daddy isn't here at night, I feel so empty and lonely.】
【Gavin: I took care of you seven times today. Still not satisfied?】
【Little Nympho: Is Daddy coming? I'm all yours tonight. You can do whatever you want to me...】
Gavin's reply was only two words.
【Gavin: Wait there.】
I turned off the tablet and closed my eyes in pain.
I thought I didn't care anymore, but seeing those chat logs felt like being hit with a heavy club.
Hot tears rolled down from the corners of my eyes.
I didn't know when I fell asleep. I only remembered that my dreams were filled with images of a man and a woman entangled.
The man's face was Gavin's.
Buzz―
My own phone vibrated.
I opened it to find a video.
The scene in the video was identical to my dream.
The man and woman were passionately entwined, even more intensely than I had imagined.
Gavin's face was distorted by desire, making me feel incredibly disgusted.
【Lila Brooks: Have you ever seen him like this? He says he can only be this satisfied with me.】
The one-minute video ended quickly.
Then it started again.
Repeat, and repeat.
I watched it over and over, almost like a form of self-torture.
I wanted to see exactly what Gavin looked like in this moment. I wanted to burn away the last bit of my love for him and kick him out of my heart completely.
I had already asked a lawyer to draft the divorce papers.
I wiped my tears and placed the divorce agreement into an exquisite gift box, tying it with a silk ribbon.
Gavin didn't return until noon the next day, carrying a box of pastries.
"Hey baby, your husband kept his word. I brought you some treats. Happy?"
I gave a dismissive "Mhm."
Gavin saw my red eyes. He cupped my face and kissed away the tear stains. "Why were you crying? Who upset my baby? Tell me, I'll get revenge for you."
He still smelled of that metallic, musky scent of sex mixed with a woman's cosmetics. It made me feel sick.
I pushed his hand away and kept my distance.
"No one. I just watched a sad movie last night."
Gavin hugged me tightly. "Don't watch those alone next time. Wait for me to watch them with you."
Watch with me?
He spent his days and nights with Lila Brooks.
I really wanted to ask him: Can you even find the time for me?
Gavin pointed at the elegant gift box on the coffee table and said in surprise, "Jenna, is this for me?"
I nodded. "Didn't you say you have a surprise for our anniversary? I have one for you too."
Gavin seemed very happy, holding the gift like a treasure. "Can I open it?"
"Wait until our anniversary next week. Open it then."
